Gretchen Farrell Interiors is a boutique design firm based in North Salem, New York with an office in Charleston, South Carolina. Led by principals Gretchen Farrell and Jane Hargarten, the studio specializes in residential interior design and decoration, defined by an effortless balance of understatement, warmth, and refinement.
Whether transforming mid-century ranches or crafting English-inspired cottages, the firm’s work is rooted in a sense of place and classic design - drawing upon an urban sophistication balanced by the welcoming spirit of the South. They create homes that feel both personal and timeless, shaped by how their clients live and what they love.
Sisters Gretchen and Jane were raised in Columbus, Georgia. Moving frequently as children sparked a passion for creating spaces where memories can linger in comfort, absorbing lessons in decoration and design from their parents' love of transforming homes. These formative years cultivated a thoughtful, client-centered approach to design.
Currently, the firm is working on a new build in Northeast Harbor, Maine, a colonial revival on the Connecticut Sound, and a Manhattan townhouse. Recent projects include a historic country estate in Georgia, a renovation of a 19th century schoolhouse in Upper Westchester, a family farm in Bedford, NY, and a modern colonial-style renovation in Waccabuc, NY. Their work has been featured in publications such as Elle Decor, Luxe Interiors + Design, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens and Livingetc.
Founded in 2018 by Gretchen Farrell, her sister, Jane Hargarten, joined her as partner in the firm in August 2025, marking the realization of their longtime dream to build a family-run firm that reflects a shared values and creative vision.

Gretchen Farrell
PRINCIPAL DESIGNER
Gretchen Farrell is based out of the firm’s headquarters in North Salem, New York. Prior to launching her eponymous firm in 2018, Gretchen studied at Parsons School of Design and worked under acclaimed Manhattan-based decorator Thomas Jayne of Jayne Design Studio. Originally from Georgia and a New Yorker for over 20 years, Gretchen's designs beautifully blend her warm southern heritage with east coast polish. Her eye is drawn to the marriage of old and new, layering antiques with contemporary pieces. She believes a home should tell a story, and her work reflects a deep respect for architecture, craftsmanship, and the art of living well. Gretchen approaches each project as an opportunity to craft spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.
